As part of our PSHE curriculum, we are planning to hold a focus week where we will be promoting Relationships and Sex Education throughout the school. Written by Sr Jude Groden, the scheme is entitled ‘A Journey in Love’ and is focused on exploring the subject from a Christian perspective. As the name suggests, this scheme is focused on building understanding of how relationships are formed from the spiritual, social, emotional and intellectual perspective and involves a series of age-specific lessons for each year group.
In Years 5 and 6 the remit widens to encompass the physical nature of relationships and therefore we intend to talk to our Year 5 and 6 pupils about puberty and development. This will involve showing a short film concerned with the physical and emotional changes experienced during puberty. There will also be opportunities for the children to ask questions, which will be answered sensitively and honestly, whilst keeping in mind the Catholic Christian teaching of our school. Should our staff feel unable to answer a question, they will advise the child to discuss the matter with their parents. Boys and girls will be grouped separately to allow them to discuss any issues raised more freely. ‘A Journey In Love’ Week is planned for the week beginning 28th January.
If you would like to view the DVD prior to these lessons we will be showing it on Friday 25th January at 2:40 pm. (If you are a Year 5 parent who came along last year – it is the same DVD as you would have watched then, but you are very welcome to view it again!) If you would like to attend, please return the slip by Wednesday 23rd January.
Should you require any further information, please contact Mrs Jaworski.
